You’ve probably heard of one of my readers.
His name is Elon Musk.
Over the last year or so, he’s liked, commented, or shared at least three pieces I’ve written on X.
On the last occasion, he shared it directly to his audience. That immediately put my words in front of 23 million people. That moment alone gained me over 10,000 followers.
How did this happen?
It was not an accident. Well, not entirely.
Since I started posting more regularly, I have tried out various strategies to reach more people. Many of them work, but the most powerful is this one:
You must learn to leverage other people’s audiences to build your own.
The social media landscape gives extraordinary opportunities to find people who care about your ideas, your story, your business and mission.
The key is to get in front of as many people as possible to find your tribe.
Facebook makes you pay in order to do this. But X, at its best, allows you to reach extremely influential people more directly than anywhere else.
In the case of Elon Musk, I observed his interests, his passions, his tastes. I certainly do not share many of them. But we both care about how propaganda works, and how people are manipulated through the information they see every day.
Once I understood this, I used a few tactics to try and reach him. This is not easy to do, as he’s the single largest account on the platform. Millions of people are trying to spam him every day. But with a little strategy, I did it. Not once, not twice, but three times.
The tactics I’ve learned are ones I’ve advised clients to use as well. Because of this work, among other things, clients have had politicians, massive influencers, and business leaders like Jeff Bezos follow them.
What really works is not some cunning trick. (Though you want to be smart about how you post.)
It’s quality.
Strategies for Capturing Elon Musk’s Attention
Be truthful, be interesting, be strategic, and you’ll find more resonance for your ideas than you thought possible.
With enough patience and effort, one piece of content can change your life.
I’ve had friends and clients gain 25,000 followers from a single thread on X.
Others have gotten offers for business deals from a single viral tweet.
Platforms like Substack, X, and LinkedIn are powerful. Yet many people, especially in business, still underestimate them.
If you’re willing to be original and take a little risk, you can succeed. Perhaps you can get Elon Musk — or the Elon Musk of your world—to pay attention.
The question almost everyone encounters is: are you willing to do it?
Having tens of millions of people paying attention to you at once can be overwhelming.
Are you afraid you just might get what you’re after?
Or are you ready to build an audience of your own?
